Stuff to do/Places to go/Food to Eat
As if a Rocky Con weren't enough! We know from past experience that people like to have one place to go. And we're happy to say that we do. You can attend the events and stumble back to your room without leaving a door. But if you're the adventurous type, or you decide to spend a day before or after the con in the area, here's a few ideas for you:
Washington, DC
Our Nation's Capital has no shortage of attractions. And a good number of them are free. (bonus!)
- The National Zoo -Part of the Smithsonian Institution, the Zoo is located a few blocks off the Metro line. We have Tai Shan, the baby panda, and a whole host of other critters to look at for free.
- The National Mall/Smithsonian Institution -John Smithson, an Englander, tried to give a crapload of money to GB to build a bunch of museums and learning institutions. They refused it. So in a nose-thumbing move, he gave it to us instead. It sat in red tape for years, but has since grown into the largest number of free admission museums in the world, and one of the most reknowned and respected names to boot. The moral? When someone offers you a big pile of money... take it.
- The Monuments and general patriotic-y sights - Each one has a different page, so here's an about.com guide.
- Dupont Circle -The "bohemian" area. Good restaurants, fun shops, and lots of gay bars. Always worth a visit.
- Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum - Some say it's still haunted by his ghost. At least Baltimore is... it's the only professional sports team to be named after a poem (The Ravens)
- Fells Point - Bohemia in the other direction. Great shops and even better food. And there's a strip club nearby called "The Ritz."
- The Inner Harbor -Baltimore's official tourist trap. Big malls, big restaurants and clubs. Beautiful, but a bit pricey.
- The John Waters Stuff -He's filmed most of his stuff in the city or about it. Sadly, the city seems to enjoy tearing a lot of the stuff down any chance they get, but some landmarks from films do remain.
- The Museum of Visionary Art -Although mentioned in the previous link, I think it deserves a spot on its own. If you like art but are tired of the average art museum, this is the place for you.
